2. Use a plain background. An uncluttered background forces attention on your baby. Place your baby against a plain background or move yourself (and the camera) a few feet.

3. Capture feelings. A smirk, a frown, a wail – capture all the emotions, not just the pretty smiles. Babies are uninhibited and uncensored, show it in your pictures.

4. Get close. Zoom in, filling the frame to emphasize what’s important, creating a more impactful photo. Capture the details, like blue eyes, a toothless smile, or tiny fingers.

5. Show scale. Take pictures of your baby with items that will show her relative size – a teddy bear or Daddy’s hands. Take a series of pictures with the same object as your baby grows.

6. Try different angles. Get down on their level, shoot from high above, shoot some sideways, some looking up at them.

7. Include other people. Capture others with the baby – Big Sister feeding the baby or Grandpa dancing with his little grandson. Make sure to include everyone who visits your baby.

8. Take some vertical pictures. Many subjects look better in a vertical picture – from the Eiffel Tower to portraits of your friends. Make a conscious effort to take some vertical pictures.

9. Use natural light. Shoot photos next to windows or outdoors, taking advantage of natural light. Cloudy, overcast days provide the best lighting for pictures of people.

10. Take lots of photos. Always keep your camera handy! Babies change so fast, capture every moment right from birth, including all firsts. Document a day in the life of your baby.

I have made several projects, but one that really stands out, was a gift for my mother who lives across the country. My mother’s cat, Benjamin, recently passed away and its been a heartbreaking time for her and the family. I wanted to make something really special for my mom, but I had no idea what to do or where to start. I loved this cat too, so I was at a loss.

I emailed Heidi and asked for some ideas. Heidi is always ready to help you when you need help. She offered to help take the pressure off of me during this sad time and she went through my photos of Benjamin and started working on the project. Within a few days, she had this beautiful masterpiece (an 8×8 Canvas of Benjamin). We had it directly shipped to my mother and she called me the moment she opened it, and was VERY grateful. My mother hung it on her wall and looks at it everyday. It was the perfect gift and I think it also helps her deal with the loss. I cannot explain the amazing feeling you get when you share your custom-made books (and more) with your friends and family. I recently decided to create a brag book with pictures of my children to carry in my purse – and I gave it a SPRINGY feel – full of Sunshine! Its in the template gallery now if you’d like to swap your photos in and make it for yourself!

Springy weather has brought on the urge to design in bright happy colors!  I designed a new 8×20 gallery wrapped canvas last night…  I think it will cheer me up whenever I see it on my office wall.

Canvas prints in the smaller sizes are my new ‘favorite’ product to create and publish in the Heritage Makers Online Studio lately.  They are just so simple to create -being that they consist of only one page/surface to design so it doesn’t take much time to complete (especially if you use a template) and they make lovely home decor items and perfect custom gifts for friends and family.

This month of March we are having a surprise special on Consultant Sign Up Kits for women just like you to join us and spread the word on custom family keepsakes and get paid for it!  Its not a ‘job’ its your own home business.  Becoming a Consultant was the best decision I have ever made.  I receive many positive rewards for helping others to learn how to preserve their memories and precious photos this way.  In fact – if I won the lottery and I never had to ‘work’ again I would keep doing this because it’s become my passion and the personal rewards are so much greater than any paycheck.  I’ve established friendships with my clients and fellow consultants and I have a new ‘social life’ to add spice to my life.  My children create their own projects in our Studio and the look on their faces when they open the mail and see the end result of their work is priceless to me.  The emotional moments when we give a special life storybook or family recipe book on birthdays or holidays is just something that NEVER gets old….its something the people in my life look forward to and cherish.  I am my family’s Heritage Maker – and I’m sure that will be scripted onto my gravestone one day (which will be in the shape of a giant storybook – lol).  I want to be known as the person in my family and circle of friends as the one who took the time and made it a priority to preserve our family stories and published our photos into keepsakes for a lifetime – and many other lifetimes – as they pass down from generation to generation.
